  • Hanukkah can be spelled in many different ways, including Chanukah, Chanukkah, and Hanukkah.
  • The meaning of the word "Hanukkah" in Hebrew is "Dedication".
  • Hanukkah begins on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. Because the Hebrew calendar is lunar rather than solar, the dates vary from the Western calendar. It is celebrated sometime in November-December on the Gregorian calendar.
  • Until the late 1800's Hanukkah was a minor holiday. Thereafter, it became one of the most celebrated Jewish holidays.
  • There are nine candles on the Hanukkah menorah.
  • The Hanukkah menorah is also called a Hanukkiah or Chanukiah.
  • There is a special candle on the menorah called "Shamash". It is a helper candle that is lit first and used to light the remaining candles every night of Hanukkah.
