  • Independence Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.
  • Independence Day commemorates the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
  • The 4th of July was not declared a national holiday until 1941.
  • he American national anthem, the "Star-Spangled Banner," is set to the tune of an English drinking song ("To Anacreon in Heaven").
  • On July 4th, 1884 the Statue of Liberty was given to the United States as a gift.
  • The iron framework of the Statue of Liberty was devised by French engineer Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, who also built the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
  • The US flag has 13 stripes representing the original 13 colonies (7 red and 6 white). In the upper left corner is a navy blue field with 50 white stars that represents the states.
  • Betsy Ross, according to legend, sewed the first American flag in May or June 1776, as commissioned by the Congressional Committee.
