As we struggle through these tough economic times, we are all trying to find ways to be savvy recessionistas. Part of that is doing more cooking at home. For me this has been a bit of a challenge since I am certainly not the world’s greatest chef. Where I really struggle is baking. I dread it! But, I’ve been searching for tips to help me embrace my baking fears and tackle the ever daunting birthday cake. Now, I don’t really want it to look homemade, I want it to look fabulous so I’ve looking around for decorating tips. We found this great site cakesandkids.com, that features some great cake decorating tips. I figure if it can help me, it can help everyone! Here’s a few of their tips:
Frosting:
- Make sure the cake is completely cool before frosting
- Place your cake upside down to frost because the bottom provides a nice flat surface for decorating (genius!)
- Thin your frosting with corn syrup
- Thicken your frosting with powdered sugar
