The Fourth of July is one of the best summer holidays. It’s always filled with lots of good food, friends and plenty of fireworks. When dealing with fireworks, it’s vital to handle them safely and properly; they are explosives after all. We consulted the National Council On Fireworks Safety to share important firework safety tips to help you and your family have a fun, festive, and injury free 4th of July. Here’s what we’ve found:
- Although it may seem obvious, it is only safe to use fireworks outdoors. No matter how harmless or small the firework may seem, always light them outside.
- Consult your city or town’s local firework laws. Many counties have banned fireworks so find out whether they are legal in your area. You don’t want any unexpected visits by your local police!
- Make sure you always have water handy. A big bucket of water or an easily accesible hose work great.
- As tempting as it may be to create your own fireworks contraption, only use fireworks as intended by the manufacturer. Don’t try to alter or combine them, the results could leave you or others seriously injured.

- It is so frustrating when you light a firework only to find out it’s a dud but, NEVER re-light a dud. It is best to wait 20 minutes before moving it, then soak it in a bucket of water.
- Make sure spectators keep a safe distance from the lighter. If lighting them, consider wearing safety googles to protect yourself. Use long match sticks or the punks that are provided with the fireworks.
- Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. If lighting the fireworks, stay sober- be the designated lighter.
- The recommended minimum age for handling sparklers is age 12. They may seem harmless but they often can bend and could seriously burn a child.
- Never use homemade fireworks or any illegal explosives; they can kill you. Report any illegal explosive use the your local authorities.
